TOEFLリスニングセクションの問題文を元に勉強しよう【TOEFL対策】

「TOEFLのリスニングが難しすぎる…！」

TOEFLのリスニングは、レクチャーなどのアカデミックな内容に関するテーマが主流で、専門的なボキャブラリーの理解が求められます。それはつまり、日常会話を聴き取ることよりも専門性が高く難しい、ということです。

たとえ留学を1年くらい経験していても、「語彙力」と「発音」を正しく学習していなければ、スコアは6割も取得できません

勉強方法も通常のリスニング対策のように「聞き流し」をしていても効果がほとんど出ません。

ということで、今回はリスニングの問題文を元に効率的な勉強方法について解説していきます。

リスニングは問題文を見ながら勉強すると良い

TOEFLのリスニングが「難しい！」と感じる場合、以下のような原因があると考えられます：

• 難しいボキャブラリーを知らない
• 英語を長時間きいていると意味が処理できない
• 英語が聴き取れない箇所がある

上記の原因を解消しないまま、いくらリスニングを続けても全く効果がありません。なぜなら、「知らない・処理できない音声を聞いても脳は雑音として情報を処理するから」です。

簡単に言うと、リスニングした後に頭の中に情報がちゃんと残らない、ということです

解消する方法は、以下の2つです：

• 意味理解の向上：語彙力・文法力の強化
• 音声知覚の向上：正しい発音の習得

リスニング対策で、重要なことは上記の2つだけです。この2つだけカバーできれば、リスニングに関する問題はほとんど解消できます。

正しい発音を習得すると、「英語の訛り」が強い場合でも聴き取れるようになりますよ

そのために重要なことが、問題文を見ながらリスニングの勉強をすると言うことです。

問題文を見ながらリスニングの勉強をすることによって：

• 分からない単語や文法を理解できる
• 音声に合わせて発音の練習ができる

ので、上記の2つの力を同時に伸ばすことができます。

ということで、実際に問題文を見ながら、リスニングセクションの音源を聞いてみましょう。

Man: Oh, hi! It’s good to see you. What’s happening?
Woman: I’m busy with my classes. The quarter’s going by really quickly. How about you? What have you been up to?
Man: Busy with school and work. Hey, what are you taking spring quarter?
Woman: Literature, sociology … botany, and … uh … I’m hoping to do something in the arts, maybe some sort of work experience or internship.
Man: No kidding! I didn’t know you were artistic. What do you have in mind?
Woman: Well, there’s this theater group I just found out about in Chester. I went to a couple of their plays. They’re an interesting company. They perform a lot of new works, and they also do older plays that aren’t very well known, and … well … I’m really impressed and would love to work with them in some way.
Man: No kidding! I didn’t know you were into theater. Do you act?
Woman: Not really … I took drama in high school, but I was awful on stage. No … it’s not acting that interests me as much as … all the other stuff.
Man: Like what? Directing? Lighting?
Woman: All of it, actually. This theater I told you about—they have the best sets! I’d like to build sets. Or make costumes,  find props — I don’t know, even work in the office. It’s the whole atmosphere of theater that I find exciting.
Man: It sounds like you need to be a theater intern.
Woman: But, as far as that goes … my problem is I don’t know anything about setting it up.
Man: What, the internship?
Woman: Yeah.
Man: Do you know anyone who works there?
Woman: No. I only found out about it ‘cause I went to a couple of plays.
Man: Better go see your advisor about this. Doesn’t the advising department post a list of internships that are available?
Woman: Yeah, there’s a list. I already checked it, and there was nothing in theater. But I’ll talk to Sherry, of course. She’s my adviser.
Man: You know what you could do? When I had to do an observation last year for my psychology class—we had to observe a workgroup for two weeks—what I did—how 1 got started was, I picked out a couple of law firms and then just sent formal letters of introduction. I told them I was a student, and had to do a report for one of my classes, and asked if I could meet with them to arrange an observation in their workplace.
Woman:     Oh … really? And what happened?
Man:     I said I’d call them, and the first firm I called said I could do it there.
Woman: Wow! You make it sound so easy. I wonder if that’d work with the theater.
Man:     It’s worth a try, isn’t it?
Woman:     It’s worth a try. Hey, I’m glad I ran into you!

赤字の部分は、音声の省略や音声変化が起こっているので、音読やオーバーラッピングをする時には注意しましょう。

黒字の部分は少し分かりにく単語や表現です。知らない場合は、すぐに文脈と照らし合わせながら意味を理解しましょう。
