Read the passage below. You have 3 minutes to read through:

In the United States, it had been common practice since the late 1980s not to suppress natural forest fires. The “let it burn” policy assumed that forest fires would burn themselves out quickly, without causing much damage. However, in the summer of 1988, forest fires in Yellowstone, the most famous national park in the country, burned for more than two months arid spread over a huge area, encompassing more than 800,000 acres. Because of the large scale of the damage, many people called for replying to the “let it burn” policy with a policy of extinguishing forest fires as soon as they appeared. Three kinds of damages caused by the “let it burn” policy were emphasized by critics of the policy.

First, Yellowstone fires caused tremendous damage to the park’s trees and other vegetation. When the fires finally died out, nearly one-third of Yellowstone’s land had been scorched. Trees were charred and blackened from flames and smoke/. Smaller plants were entirely incinerated. What had been a national treasure now seemed like a devastated wasteland.

Second, park wildlife was affected as well. Large animals like deer and elk were seen fleeing the fire. Many smaller species were probably unable to escape. There was also concern that the destruction of habitats and the disruption of food chairs would make it impossible for the animals that surmised the fire to return.

Third, the fires compromised the value of the park as a tourist attraction, which in turn had negative consequences for the local economy. With several thousand acres of the park engulfed in flames, the tourist season was cut short, and a large number of visitors derided to stay away. Of course, local businesses that depend on park visitors suffered as a result.

解答例

In the reading, the author claims that the “let it burn” policy was very damaging significantly when it happened in Yellowstone park by pointing out three reasons for support. However, finding this claim questionable and implausible, the lecturer totally repudiates the claim and presents some evidence to the contrary.

At first, the author argues that Yellowstone fires caused a huge amount of damage to the park’s trees vegetation. Smaller plants were completely damaged. On the other hand, the lecturer brings up the idea that the Yellowstone fires caused diversity in the vegetation. For example seeds of plants were in a good situation to grow in a high level of temperature.

In addition, the reading holds the view that the destruction of habitat and eliminate food chains threatened the park wildlife. Conversely, the lecturer disputes this point by clarifying the fact that the Yellowstone fire helps the existence of new small plants habitat which could grow in the shade of fallen trees and created a new opportunity for some animals like rabbits and herd to feed on this small plants. The lecturer explains that predators feed on these animals and as a result, a new food chain had formed.

Finally, the author asserts the tourism industry was threatened as the last point for supporting the changing of the “let it burn” policy. The lecturer, though, dismisses it by pointing out that if this event had happened every day, the claim was true but the reason for decreasing tourism at that year was because of low rainfall and strong wind and some other natural disaster. As he stated, the year after that, visitors came back so tourists and the local economy based on tourism increased year by year.

Independent

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

“Overall, the widespread use of the internet has a mostly positive effect on life in today’s world.”

Use reasons and details to support your opinion.

Most people agree that modern technology affects society in many different ways.  In my opinion, access to the Internet is enormously beneficial to both individuals and communities as a whole.  I feel this way for two reasons, which I will explore in the following essay.

To begin with, online investigative reporting helps to expose political corruption and keep politicians honest.  In the past, there were only a limited number of news outlets, which often had deep connections to powerful politicians. As a result, they were extremely hesitant to criticize them. These days, however, there are many independent publications on the Internet that are willing to expose political misbehavior.  For example, an online magazine recently published a story revealing that the mayor of my hometown had taken bribes from a property developer. The report was so detailed and well-researched that the mayor had no choice but to resign. Although the evidence was not difficult to locate, only this independent website was willing to write about it.  This example demonstrates how the Internet helps to strengthen democracy in the modern world.

Secondly, people are more motivated than ever to become politically active because they can freely exchange ideas online.  In countries all over the globe, people use social networking services to share their ideas and opinions. While in the past people might have thought that they were alone in their beliefs, today they realize that others share their ideas. My own experience demonstrates this concept.  When I was a university student, I learned that a municipal park near my apartment was going to be demolished to make room for a massive parking lot. This bothered me a lot because I enjoyed spending my free time in the park. At first, I thought that there was nothing that I, as an individual, could do to stop this from happening.  However, I later joined a Facebook group dedicated to opposing the plan. When the members of the group learned how many people in the city loved the park we were happy to get together and enthusiastically protest in front of the city hall until our voices were heard. I am convinced that finding each other on that social networking platform gave us the courage to actively protect our park.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that the Internet has a positive effect on our lives.  This is because online journalism strengthens our democracy and because social networking sites encourage people to be get involved in local politics.
