英語のエッセイにてアイデアを比較するテクニックを紹介します。
見栄えが良いエッセイには比較が入っています

英語のエッセイと比較
英語のエッセイは導入、ボディ、結論の3構成で書きます。エッセイによって書く文字数が違い、それによってボディの数が変わります。
エッセイに比較を持ってくる理由は、アイデアを比較することで自分の主張を際立たせるためです。
相違点や類似点の双方を比較することができるメリットがあります。
比較表現の多くはcompareがいろいろな形に変化をするパターンが多くを占めます。
類似点と相違点の比較
比較の基本としては、以下2パターンがあります。
- compare A with B
- make a comparison between A and B
この2つの比較はandを真ん中に挟むことでAとBの違い、または類似点を見せるために使用します。
例文を上げて確認してみましょう。
- Please compare your answer with the teacher’s.
- When it comes to living, people like to compare rural life with City life.
- It would be interesting to make a comparison between Tokyo and Rome.
- Luke makes a comparison between a picture taken of Aida three years ago and one that happened taken recently
compare A with B = make a comparison between A and Bだと言えそうですね
アナロジーとしての比較
次にcompare A to Bについてみていきましょう。上記のandがtoに変わったパターンです。
AはBと類似している、もしくはアナロジーの導入として使用します。分かりやすく例を見てみましょう。
- He compared life to Journey.
( lifeとjourneyのアナロジーとして使用しています) - Her singing can be compared to Whitney Houston.
( 彼女の歌はWhitney Houstonと同じぐらい上手だという意味あいです)
このcompared A to Bの感覚が掴めない生徒が多いです
同等レベルの比較
次に良い意味でも悪い意味でもAとBが同等レベルの比較をしたい際の表現です。
- A compares with B
- A compares to B
先ほどとの違いに気づいますか？この場合compareは他動詞としての形をとります。分かりやすく先ほどの例文でみてみましょう。
- Her singing compares to Whitney Houston’s
- Her singing compares with Whitney Houston’s
ちなみに上はアメリカ英語で、下はイギリス英語のニュアンスです
以下のような否定形と共に使う方法もあります。意味は分かりますか？
He says skiing is fun enough, but it doesn’t compare to snowboarding.
スキーは面白いけど、スノーボードの方が面白いという意味になります
相違点を強調する比較
相違点を強調するための比較としては以下のような表現があります。
- compared to/with
- in comparison to/with
同じ意味ですので入れ替えて使用することも可能です。
- In comparison to the languages spoken around the world, Mandarin is spoken by the most number of people.
- Compared to today’s internet speeds, telephone internet connections are extremely slow.
上の例文では中国語を際立たせるためにい、下の例文では電話回線の遅さを際立たせるために使用されていますね。
Comparativeの使い方
compareの品詞が変わった形としてのcomparativeは覚えておくと エッセイではアカデミックの雰囲気が出るので役立ちます。
comparative 1
A＋動詞＋comparative adjective＋than＋B＋動詞(省略されることもある)の公式です。
- Developing countries are more reliant on alternative energy production than developed countries (are).
- Picasso’s art is better than Van Gogh’s (art).
- Solar energy is cheaper than any other source of energy (is).
comparative 2
A＋動詞＋comparative adverb＋than＋B＋動詞(省略されることもある)の公式です。
- I study harder than John (does).
- Computers impact human life more profoundly than cellphones.
comparative 3
A＋動詞＋more/less something than B＋do/does(省略されることもある)の公式です。
- East Asia produces more notebook computers than any other area (does) in the world.
- Solar power accounts for less total energy production than gas or coal (does).
comparative 4
主語＋動詞＋time A＋than＋time Bの公式です。
- Big cars that use a lot of petrol are less popular now than (they were) twenty years ago.
- It is easier to travel to a different place now than (it was) thirty years ago.
数量詞をつけた比較
数量詞をつけた比較を行うことでA とB の大きな、もしくは小さな差を表現することが可能です。例文をみてみましょう。
- His salary as an online tutor is slightly higher than that of a teacher.
- Western countries consume two times more oil than the Middle East.
- It is much easier to travel to a different place now than (it was) thirty years ago.
下記の数量詞を覚えて比較に緩急をつけられるように準備をしておきましょう。
大きな値を示すための数量詞
- A lot of/lots of
- Far/far greater than
- Much
- Any
- Plenty of
- Several
- Significantly
- Considerably
小さな値を示すための数量詞
- A little
- A bit of
- A few
- Not any
- None
- Slightly
- marginally
同等を示す比較
中学英語でも登場するas~asですが、 上手にエッセイ内で使える人はごく一握りです。
基本的な役目としては、「AとBは同等に〜だ」と表現したい際に使用します。
- The contribution of the electronic light to human welfare is as great as those of any other invention.
- Western countries consume as much oil as the Middle East.
数量詞をつけた比較と使い方自体は同じでした
