【反証を挙げるテクニック】英語エッセイの書き方

英語のエッセイにて反証を挙げるテクニックを紹介します。

反証を上げることにより自分の意見を強固にできます

英語のエッセイと反証

英語のエッセイは導入、ボディ、結論の3構成で書きます。エッセイによって書く文字数が違い、それによってボディの数が変わります。

例えばIELTSのエッセイでは250-270字の範囲ですのでボディパラグラフは2つ、TOEFLのエッセイは400字弱ですのでボディバラグラフは3つが理想となります。

長いエッセイを書くためには、敢えて自分の意見に反証を持ってくることが有効です。

導入パラグラフと反証

導入パラグラフは自分のポジションを明確にするThesis Statementが必要なため、反証は導入しない方がいいという人がいます。

しかし下記のような問によっては可能です。

例題: Do you support or oppose the construction of nuclear power plants in your country?

実際に反証を上げてみましょう

In many parts of the world, there were heated discussions surrounding the issue of whether it is a good idea to build nuclear power plants. On one hand, proponents of construction argue that nuclear power plants can bring an abundant flow of low-cost electricity supplies in the future. On the other hand, opponents argue that nuclear waste can bring hazards to the country. In my opinion, despite obvious benefits brought by a nuclear power plant, the disadvantages of having a nuclear power plant far outweigh its benefits. Therefore, I would adamantly oppose the idea of building nuclear power plants in my country.

In my opinion以下で自分のポジションを明確にする前に、nuclear power plantという大トピックに関するメリットとデメリットの双方を述べていることが確認できます。

On the other hand以下がOn one hand以下の反証になっていることが分かります

上記以外にエッセイ内で反証を挙げる表現はいくつかあります。

実際にパラグラフ内で使用してみましょう。

Across the globe, the issue of whether or not the construction of nuclear plants shall be granted permission is much debated. For backers of the construction plan, they feel a nuclear power plant brings a steady flow of supplied electricity at low cost, thus casting off a lesser burden on living expenses of local citizens. On the contrary, opponents of construction plant argue that it is unscrupulous to build a new plant while there is no solution to disposal of nuclear waste. From a safety perspective, I hold an opposing stance on the construction of nuclear power plants.

以下のような論理構造になっていることがわかります。

前: 原発は人々の生活コストを下げる
On the contrary
後: 処分の仕方が不明な原発を使うのは不徳だ

反証表現＋意見の主張

反証表現を使用した後に自分の意見を上手に表現する必要があります。例を見てみましょう。

In the western education system, schools focus their resources and energy on developing students’ critical thinking abilities. By contrast, in an Asian education system, students are taught to learn in a subservient way. That is, forming an opinion of their own is not highly encouraged.

反証表現以下が自分の主張になる場合にまとめげる言葉として以下3つがあります。

こういった表現をすることによってより自分の意見が強固になるのです

逆説を使用した反証

読み手に驚きや予期せぬ展開を与えたい時に使用する語彙が以下3つです。

Nevertheless
Nonetheless
However

日本語では譲歩の逆説などといいますが分かりにくいですね。例を見てみましょう。

With scientific evidence showing that the environment has been adversely affected by the industrial expansion, developed countries that have kept a close eye on environmental issues such as climate changes, rising sea levels, and so on, are coming up with ways to regulate industrial practices. Nevertheless, what is interesting is the dissent coming from developing countries, voicing opinions that with these laws and regulations they would face more roadblocks on the way to prosperity.

なぜNeverthelessを使用するかわかりますか？

Neverthelessの前では先進国が環境保護に対するアクションが少ないのに対し、Nevertheless後では、「意外にも」後進国の方がこれらに反対していると主張したいためです。

読み手にたいして意外性を強調していることがわかります

前置詞句の反証

以下のような前置詞句を使用した反証表現も可能です。

in contrast to
as opposed to
contrary to

導入パラグラフでの例を見てみましょう。

Across the globe, the issue of whether or not the construction of nuclear power plants shall be granted permission is much debated. In contrast to the mainstream view that radioactive waste is dangerous and could post a serious threat to the environment, I believe that nuclear power plants are safe and clean.

筆者は自分の意見がメインストリームと違うことを主張していますね

as opposed to / contrary to

as opposed to / contrary toの例文も確認しておきましょう。

In order to be productive and successful I feel that careful planning is the best option as opposed to taking random chances or risks. Careful planning ensures success by way of; having a plan B, knowing exactly what to expect, and finally attention to detail.

Contrary to the public belief, I support for individual’s right to legally undergo euthanasian under dire conditions, especially in terms of health issues.

in spite of と despite

in spite of と despiteは上記で紹介した表現と違い、意外性や驚きを導入したい時に使用します。

またこの2つは前置詞なので後続に名詞が必要なことも違いの一つであります。確認してみましょう。

They arrived late despite leaving / despite them leaving with plenty of time.
They arrived late in spite of the fact they left with plenty of time.

従属接続詞と逆説

最後に従属接続詞の反証を紹介します。以下4つがそれにあたります。

Although
Even though
While
Whereas

Althoughとeven thoughはdespiteとin spite ofと同じ意味ですが、後に「節」が続く、つまり主語と動詞が必要という点において違います。

例: Despite obvious benefits brought by a nuclear power plant, the disadvantages of having a nuclear power plant far outweigh its benefits.

Despiteの後にbenefitsという名詞が続いています。これをAlthoughをつかったものに言い換えてみましょう。

Although there are obvious benefits brought by a nuclear power plant, the disadvantages of having a nuclear power plant far outweigh its benefits.

there areという主語と動詞がクッションとして入りました。

WhileとWhereas

WhileとWhereasは前後で逆説の関係を示します。In contrastと同じです。

例: The Subway is the only form of transportation that has a guaranteed schedule and doesn’t deal with traffic, whereas driving on the bus don’t guarantee arrival times or quick trip.
