英語エッセイでアイデアを効果的に表現する5つのテクニック

英語のエッセイにてアイデアを効果的に表現するための5つのテクニックを紹介します。

英語のエッセイとアイデア

英語のエッセイで一貫性を持たせて展開するための鍵になる要素は2つあります。

一貫性があるとは、自分のポジション(意見)とその妥当性を主張するためのアイデアが強固であることをさします。

ポジションを冒頭の導入パラグラフで示したあと、後続のボディパラグラフにてアイデアを一つずつ展開していきます。

ポジションとアイデアの関連性が弱く、英語力が高いにもかかわらずエッセイとして一貫性に欠ける人が多いです。

IELTSやTOEFLのエッセイの評価項目の1つに「一貫性」とあるぐらい、一貫性のあるエッセイであることは大切です。

エッセイではポジションとアイデアを上手に各パラグラフで展開していくことが大事なんですね

テクニック1: 一般化

まず最初のテクニックが一般化です。一般化の役割としては主に2つあります。

自分の主張が一般的なものと合致していることを示したい時
ある事象のパターンを示したい時

以下のような語句が一般化のために使用できます。

Generally
On the whole
In most cases
In general

主張が一般論と合致していることを示したいというのは、主に導入パラグラフで使用することが可能です。例を見てみましょう。

Today people attend college or university for many reasons. Obviously personal reasons may play a part, but generally, their attendance is related to today’s economy, the job market, and people’s ambition or drive.

パターンを示したい時

次に2つ目の用法として、ある事象のパターンを示したい際にも一般化が使えます。例で確認してみましょう。

Birds’ migratory behavior is highly associated with where their breeding grounds are located. On the whole, the more northerly the breeding ground is, the more likely a species will migrate south for the winter. The main reason for this annual shifting of residence is that during the northern winters food becomes scarce and the cold temperatures make survival difficult.

テクニック2: 言い換え

次に2つ目のテクニックとして、以下のような語句を使用することで自分のアイデアの言い換えを可能にします。

That is
In other words
To put it simply
That is to say

似たようなことを別の表現で使用したい際に使用すると便利です。例を見てみましょう。

例1: With the advent of the internet, people are becoming more independent of one another. That is to say, they are capable of going about their daily business with barely any help from other people due to the vast amount of information and online stores on the internet.

that is to say以下が具体例のようになっていますね。

例2: In developed countries, that majority of people are living on the second level of Living standard. In other words, people in these nations are mostly self-sufficient enough to satisfy their human needs.

ほぼ同じことを別の表現で表していますね

例3: in the western education system, schools Focus their resources and energy on developing students critical thinking abilities. By contrast, in an Asian education system, students are taught to learn in a subservient way. That is, forming an opinion of their own is not highly encouraged.

subservient wayの言い換えとして、「意見を言う事は好ましくない」となっています

テクニック3: ハイライト

テクニックの3つ目としてハイライトという技術があります。

ハイライトの目的としては、読み手の注意を引きたい際に使う語句になります。

特にエッセイの問が多肢選択の時に便利です。例題を見てみましょう

例題: many parts of the world are losing important natural resources, such as forests, animals, or clean water. Choose one resource that is disappearing and explain why it needs to be saved. Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.

一つを選ぶよう指示されていますね。

Among the natural resources that are being depleted by human activities, tropical rainforests, in particular, are in dire need of preservation. Tropical rainforests indispensable for ecological preservation, but also the protection of indigenous people whose cultures are inseparable from the tropical rainforest.

tropical rainforestsを特に読ませたいことが伝わってきます

テクニック4: 例

テクニックの4つ目は、パラグラフ内で例を上手に使用することによって自分のアイデアを証明します。

Take “something”, for example,
To give a clear example.

早速例を挙げてみましょう。

例1: Global warming is a serious problem that needs to be dealt with caution and seriousness as it can cause numerous disastrous consequences. To give a clear example, the melting polar ice caps Nicole was the loss of habitat for polar bears, but I also threatening sea levels worldwide.

極地の氷が溶けている例を上げたい際に使用しました。

例2: The second source of communication through television comes from sports. People from all over the world gathered watch and discuss sporting event on television. Take Super Bowl, for example, it is one of the most watched television events of the year, sparking weeks of discussion and gatherings of friends and family.

テクニック5: 代替案

アイデアを効果的に見せるテクニックとして代替案というものがあります。

解決案をいくつか出さないといけない時に使用をすると便利です。以下のような表現があります。

As another possibility

例題で確認してみましょう。

例題: Traffic congestion is becoming a huge problem in major cities. Suggest some measures that could be taken to reduce traffic congestion.

解決案をいくつか提示する必要があると明記されています

With surging population and urbanization, that traffic congestion and air pollution have become pressing issues in today’s society. One possible solution is to increase the price of petrol to discourage more people from driving cars. along similar lines, government can impose heavy taxes on private car owners. Alternatively, the government can improve the public transportation system to encourage more people to use it, thus reducing the number of cars on the roads.

車の所有者に課税すると提案しつつ、代替案として公共交通のシステムを改善することを提案しています。
