ソロの生徒でTOEFL iBTスピーキングで満点30点を取得した生徒の対策を分析しました。
スピーキングで伸び悩んでいる人は参考になるかもです

TOEFL iBTスピーキング
TOEFL iBTで日本人にとって極めて満点をとるのが難しいのがスピーキングです。難易度は言うまでもありませんが、評価基準を見ると理由がわかります。
- General Description（質問への回答）
- Delivery（明瞭さと流暢さ）
- Language Use（表現のバラエティ）
- Topic Development（主張の展開）
きちんと問に対して意見を展開する練習、つまり1と4に関しては上級者は練習により対応できます。しかし、ネイティブのような発音とイントネーションでリフレーズをしながら答えること、つまり2と3で満点がとりずらくなっています。
特に2019年8月以降新形式に移行後、ETS’s SpeechRaterと呼ばれるAIと人間の双方からされるようになったことで顕著です。
“Human raters evaluate content, meaning, and language in a holistic manner. Automated scoring by the SpeechRater service evaluates linguistic features in an analytic manner.”
言い換えると、人間が意味と内容、そして答え全体としての英語を確認する。AIが発音、アクセント、イントネーションを主に採点するととれます。
満点までの道のり
30点満点をとった生徒は初回受験が24点、2回目が27、3回目で30点満点とスコアが上がりました。
24点を取得した際に彼女は前提として発音、イントネーションが極めて良かったことが挙げられます。幼少期にアメリカに2年住んでいたことが影響しているようです。
その後テンプレを覚えて27点に、最後はキーワードの取り方を練習して30点になりました。
満点30点の必要条件
以上を踏まえて、日本人英語上級者でスピーキング満点を狙いにいく人が必要な条件が以下です。
- 対策1. 発音の習得
- 対策2.テンプレを活用している
- 対策3. 読み聴きのポイントを理解
- 対策4. キーワードの取り方を習得
上記の条件のみならず、当然前提として英語力がないと問の読み聴きができません。スピーキングで満点を狙いにいくというのはRとLは満点をとれる実力があるということです。
スピーキングはリーディングやリスニングの上位スキルです
対策1. 発音の習得
発音の習得というとrやlの習得のようなイメージですが、それはごく一部です。発音は以下の順で学習していくことでネイティブと同じ音が出せるようになります。
- 母音、子音の習得
- 音声変化
- オーバーラッピング
- シャドーイング
基礎の音が出せるようになってから長い文章でネイティブと同じ練習を出せるようにしていくのです。
勉強の手順
以下が発音の勉強の手順です :
- 手順1：理論を理解する（口の形や音の出し方など）
- 手順2：理論に沿ってアウトプット
- 手順3：アウトプット内容を録音する
- 手順4：録音した音の改善点を分析する
- 手順5：正しい音が出るまで「手順3」と「手順4」を繰り返す
録音してオリジナルの音と比べないと上達しません。できれば先生にフィードバックを貰うことをオススメします

対策2. テンプレート
英語ができる人ほどテンプレートを軽視します。しかし、以下3点の理由でTOEFL iBTのスピーキングではテンプレは極めて有効です。
- 時間のコントールがしやすい
- 英語の表現で悩まなくてよい
- 読み聴きに集中できる
スピーキングの全4タスクのうちタスク1が45秒、タスク2-4が60秒です。テンプレの活用でおおよそフルに話し続けることができます。
また英語の表現に悩む必要がなくなるので、問の答えるべきポイントの読み聴きに集中できます。
タスク1テンプレ
TOEFL iBT Independent スピーキングタスク1は問を読んで自分の意見表明をします。
以下のような問が本番で出ます。
問: Do you agree or disagree with the idea that watching sports programs on television is a waste of time?
それではタスク1で時間通りに話し続けるためのテンプレを確認してみましょう。
- I do agree/disagree that ＿＿＿ (5秒)
- To begin with, ＿＿＿ (15秒)
- In addition, (15秒)
- Therefore, these reasons are why I agree/disagree that ＿＿＿ (7秒)

対策3. 読み聴きのポイントを理解
TOEFL iBTスピーキングにおける読み聴きのポイントを理解するというのは、つまり問が何なのかをきちんと理解しているということです。
冒頭の評価基準でも記載しましたが、General Description（質問に対する回答）というのは明確な評価項目の1つです。
冗談のようですが、問にきちんと答えられない人が多いのです。
タスク2のIntegrated Speakingの問を例に見てみましょう。
問: The boy expresses his opinion about the announcement. State his opinion and explain the reasons that he gives for holding that opinion.
当然誰でも、 State his opinion and explain the reasonsが指示文だというのは分かります。
しかし、ここではAnnouncementという大トピックのもと彼の意見表明をまとめる必要があるのです。
つまりまずAnnouncementが何だったか冒頭でまとめる必要があります。
多くの生徒がいきなり生徒の意見を話し始めるのです
対策4. メモの取り方の習得
メモの取り方は対策2と3と密接に関連しています。まず問を理解していないと答えることが分からない、テンプレを覚えていないとどこに焦点を当てて読み聴きをすれば良いか分からないからです。
先ほどのタスク2の問をもとに考えてみましょう。まずタスク2のテンプレートを覚える必要があります。
- The man/girl agrees with the announcement/letter/article, which is about…
- There are two reasons why the man/girl supports the announcement/letter/article. ( 1と2で15秒)
- One reason is that… (20秒)
- Another reason is that… (20秒)
- Therefore, these reasons are why the man/girl believes that … is a good idea. (5秒)
このテンプレに当てはまる読み聴きのポイント拾っていきます。
READ A CAMPUS ANNOUNCEMENT: 50秒
New mandatory study seminar for all first-year students begins Nov 15, 2017. The seminar’s schedule is every Friday at 8 am and continues for the entire semester. This seminar is optional for all other students. Please bring all study material for all your classes. During each seminar, a representative will organize everyone into small study groups. All non-first-year students must organize their own study groups; however, after organizing all first-year students, we can assist you in finding a study group.
おおよそ始めの1-2文がアナウンスメントの趣旨になっていることが多いので、実質的なキーワードとなります。

Male: I really like the idea of first-year students having to attend seminars in the student center because they can review the school once a week. I remember when I was a freshman I slept off. I always put off doing the homework until close to the final exam.
Female: It must’ve been difficult to get a good grade considering a lot of material in the final exam consisted of homework material.
Male: Well. My grade would’ve been much better if I finished my homework, but I think having a seminar each week can help first-year students get into the habit of doing homework.
Female: How do you know so much about these seminars?
Male: Actually, I am attending the first-year student mandatory seminar. It really helps my study habit. In addition, it is a great place to socialize and meet people. I actually met someone who is as passionate about music as I am and we are seeing each other again today.
Female: That’s great!
テンプレで必要になる「理由」となる箇所のキーワードを赤でぬりました。ここを聞き取れていることがポイントになるのです。

The boy in the conversation agrees with the announcement which is about the school set up a mandatory seminar for all first-year students. There are two reasons why the man supports the announcement.
The first reason is that he thinks the seminar will help all first-year students improve their study habits right at the beginning of their education. During his first year, he slept late and procrastinated until close to the final exam to finish all of his homework. Unfortunately, his grade reflected these poor study habits. However, if there had been a mandatory seminar during his first year, then maybe it would’ve helped him avoid these mistakes. He could have been prepared for how to succeed right away. The second reason is he thinks this would be a great place for students to socialize. While attending the mandatory seminar, he met someone who shares his same passions.
Therefore, these reasons are why the boy in the conversation likes the idea of having a mandatory seminar for all first-year students.
