TOEFLのリーディングセクションを攻略するポイントは、出題される問題形式とそれぞれの解き方を身につけることです。
今回はリーディングセクションで頻出の、Detail Question「詳細問題」の解き方について解説していきます。
「詳細問題」も頻出問題の一つです。パッセージ内に答えがあるので、必ず正解しておきたい問題ですね

まずは実際にサンプル問題を解いてみましょう：
Stone Age Agriculture
These advances in agriculture went hand in hand with technological development. People fashioned stone tools such as hoes for working soil, sickle blades for harvesting the crops, and grinding stones for processing the grains. More important than such agricultural implements, however, was the polished stone axe, which allowed the Neolithic farmers to clear forests on a large scale and open up new lands for cultivation. Along with the adze, the axe also enabled them to work the trees they felled into the wood that was usable for building shelter and other structures.
According to the author, which of the following was most critical in the development of intensive agriculture?
- The adze
- The axe
- The sickle
- The hoe
サンプル問題の解答
答えは「B. The axe」です。
「集約的農業において最も重要な物は、以下のうちどれか？」という質問文を正しく理解することがポイントですね。
今回の場合、「Critical：重要な」という意味を理解することができると、パッセージ内に、以下の類義語を含むセンテンスが見つかります：
More important than such agricultural implements, however, was the polished stone axe, which allowed the Neolithic farmers to clear forests on a large scale and open up new lands for cultivation.
「そのような農業道具よりも重要だったものが、磨かれた石のオノでした」と書かれていますね。
「More important：より重要なこと」が、質問文の「Critical：重要な」という意味をリフレーズしていることが分かります。
リフレーズはリーディング問題を解く上で重要なテクニックの一つです。慣れると安定してスコアを取れるようになりますよ
「詳細問題」の解き方
参考までに、「詳細問題」では以下のような質問形式です：
- According to paragraph [No.], ○○○ occurred because…
- According to Paragraph [No.], which is true of ○○○?
- The author’s description of ○○○ mentions which of the following?
「According to」や「which of the following」という表現が目標ですね
上記の設問を確認したら、以下の手順で問題を解いていきます：
- 手順1：問題文を正しく理解する
- 手順2：パッセージの要点を理解する
- 手順3：該当箇所に目を通す
- 手順4：選択肢と一致する情報を本文から抜き出す
「詳細問題」は、パッセージ内に答えになる情報がのっています。問題文の意図を正しく理解して、該当箇所を読み解くことが重要です。
手順1・手順2：問題文とパッセージの要点を理解する
繰り返しになりますが、問題文の要点は必ず正しく理解しましょう。
「何を問われているか」を正しく理解しないと、パッセージの該当箇所を読み解くことができません。
問題文を「何となく」分かったつもになると、問題を解く時間が余計にかかり、正答率も下がります
パッセージのメインアイデアを理解しておくことも重要です。
「パッセージ内の論点は何なのか」を理解してからだと、該当箇所を探すのがとても簡単になります。
手順3：該当箇所に目を通す
問題文を正しく読み解けると、パッセージの「どこを読むべきか」が分かります。
今回のサンプル問題の場合、以下のキーワードを理解できていることが理想です：
According to the author, which of the following was most critical in the development of intensive agriculture?
- キーワード1：most critical
- キーワード2：development of intensive agriculture
以上のキーワードを理解して、本文に目を通してみましょう：

たくさんあるパッセージの中で、キーワードが分かることで読むべきパッセージが分かるようになります。
手順4：選択肢と一致する情報を本文から抜き出す
読むべきポイントがわかれば、あとは選択肢と一致する情報を抜き出すだけです。
今回のサンプル問題の場合、パッセージ内の語彙と同じものが選択肢にありました。しかし多くの場合、パッセージ内の語彙と選択肢はリフレーズされているので注意してください。
