今回の記事では「複数解答型の英語エッセイの書き方を解説」します。
複数解答型エッセイは、タスクの中に2つの問いが含まれている設問です。
「課題解決型」と呼ばれることもありますが、それだけとも限らないため、私は勝手に複数解答型と呼んでいます。
高スコアを取るためには、双方の問いにバランスよく解答する必要があります。特に、同程度の情報量を盛り込むことがポイントです！
それでは、詳しく見ていきましょう。
目次：
複数解答型の英語エッセイとは
まずは、複数解答型の見分け方です。
英語エッセイの設問は、主に以下の3パターンに分かれます：
- 意見型
- 両論展開型
- 複数解答型
今回は「複数解答型」を中心に見ていきますが、
どのような設問である場合に、複数解答型エッセイだと判断できるでしょうか。
以下の英文が設問に含まれている場合です。
- What are the causes of this problem?
- What are some potential solutions?
- What problem does this cause?
- What are some potential solutions?
- Do you agree or disagree?
- What are some solutions?
2つの問いが、セットで出題されていることが確認できますね。
例えば、IELTSでは以下のようなタスクとして出題されます。
- 例題：
People today do not feel safe either at home or when they are out. What are the causes? What are the solutions?
上記の表現が確認できますね。
段落構成と内部構成
次に、複数解答型の段落構成と内部構成を確認しましょう。

どの段落も、理想の内部構成はだいたい決まっています。
導入パラグラフにて、自分の意見を書く必要がありません。
意見が必要ないため、練習をすれば短期でクオリティの高い導入が書けるようになります。
ボディパラグラフは、それぞれ2つのアイデアが書けるように意識をすることが大切です。
結論パラグラフは、ボディパラグラフを抽象度高く要約ししてやります。
タスク分析と計画
タスク分析とエッセイ計画の立て方を見ていきましょう。
いきなり書き始めるのではなく、冒頭5分ほど取り、きちんと準備することをオススメします。
タスクから逸脱したり、途中で書けなくなることを防いでくれます。
タスクを正しく理解する
タスクの意図を正しく理解するとことは、とても大切です。
例題で確認しましょう。
- タスク
Some people think that in the future lots of changes will occur that will improve our society. Do you agree or disagree? What kind of changes will occur? - 日本語訳
「将来、私たちの社会をより良くするために、たくさんの変化が起こると考える人がいます。あなたは賛成ですか、それとも反対ですか？どのような変化が起こるのでしょうか？」
全てのタスクには「トピック」と「設問」が含まれています。
Some people think…society. までの前半部分を「トピック」と呼びます。
このように、トピックは一般論が一文で述べられています。
タスクの後半部分、
- Do you agree or disagree?
- What kind of changes will occur?
これらを、IELTSでは「設問」と呼びます。
1つ目の設問、Do you agree…に対して、ボディパラグラフ1で解答します。
2つ目の設問、What kind of…に対して、ボディパラグラフ2で解答します。
エッセイの計画を立てる
次に、エッセイの計画です。
エッセイは計画が全て、といっても過言ではありません。
残酷に聞こえるかもしれませんが、計画を見ただけでも、おおよそのスコアが予想できてしまいます。
自分が何を書くのか分かった状態でスタートを切ることが重要です。
Step1. キーワードに線を引く
まずトピック中の、キーワードに線を引きます。
Some people think that in the future lots of changes will occur that will improve our society.
その下に、同じ、もしくは関連した語句を書き出していきます。エッセイの冒頭でトピックのパラフレーズをするためです。
- Some people think = There are individuals who hold the belief
- lots of changes = numerous modifications
- will occur = experience
- will = leading to
- improve = overall improvement
語彙レベルでパラフレーズをするのが難しい場合は、少なくとも品詞や語順を変えることを意識しましょう。
タスクのトピックをそのまま写すことは避けて下さい。採点官はチェックしています。
Step2. アイデアをブレインストーム
解答に対する「アイデア」をブレインストームします。

ブレインストームをすると、agree/disagreeのどちらに答えやすいかは、おのずと分かると思います。
agree/disagreeの双方でアイデアが思い浮かぶ場合は、よりアイデアを展開しやすい方を選んでください。
展開しやすいとは、説明、詳細、具体例の3点が書きやすいほうという意味です。
また、どちらのアイデアを選ぶと、自分の英語を遺憾無く発揮できるか（例. 使用する語句は間違わない可能性が高い等）を想像してみてください。
このタイプのエッセイでは、情報量のバランスが大事です。
どちらの問いに対しても、計画の段階で2つのアイデアを考えるようにしましょう。
「複数解答型」エッセイの書き方
計画を立てたら、実際に書きます。
導入、ボディ、結論に分けて詳しく見ていきましょう。
導入の書き方
第1文目：トピックをパラフレーズする
エッセイ冒頭では、トピックをパラフレーズします。
トピックをパラフレーズすることで、評価の半分を占める「語句」と「文法」の項目で高スコアを得ることが可能です。
- トピック：
Some people think that in the future lots of changes will occur that will improve our society. - パラフレーズ
There are individuals who hold the belief that our society will experience numerous modifications in the future, leading to an overall improvement.
先ほど、計画Step1で練習した通りですので大丈夫かと思います。
第2文目：何についてのエッセイか述べる
第2文目では、何についてのエッセイかを述べます。
これを書くことによって、書き手のあなたが「2つの問いに答ることを理解している」ことを、採点官にアピールすることができます。
こちらの文章はいつも同じです。テンプレートとして、暗唱してしまいましょう。
- パターン1：
This essay discusses the reasons why the changes that are coming are positive, and also suggests what kind of changes will occur. - パターン2：
The main focus of this essay is to explore the positive implications of forthcoming changes and also provide insights into the specific types of changes that are likely to happen.
導入パラグラフは2文のみです。
クオリティの高い導入パラグラフを読むと、それだけで採点官はワクワクするものです！
導入まとめ
できあがった導入パラグラフを確認してみましょう。
- 導入パラグラフ
There are individuals who hold the belief that our society will experience numerous modifications in the future, leading to an overall improvement. This essay discusses the reasons why the changes that are coming are positive, and also suggests what kind of changes will occur.
この導入パラグラフを読むと、このエッセイが何についてのことで、後続のパラグラフで何が書かれるかクリアになりますね。
エッセイが苦手な人などは、まずは導入パラグラフを重点的に練習するのも一つの手です。
導入が上手だと、ボディパラグラフで語彙や文法の間違いを犯しても、採点官はどのような内容について書いてあるのか推測しやすくなるので、場合によってはミスを見逃してくれることもあります！
ボディの書き方
次に、ボディパラグラフです。ボディは、2つ書きます。
意見型エッセイの場合は3つの可能性もありますが、複数解答型では、ボディはいつも2つです。
各問いに対する解答を、それぞれのパラグラフに書きます。
つまり、1つ目のボディパラグラフに、 “Do you agree or disagree?”の解答を書き、
2つ目のボディパラグラフに、 “What kind of changes will occur?”について書きます。
どちらのパラグラフも、メインアイデア（論）は一つです。メインアイデアを、ブレインストームした2つのポイントでサポートします。
2つのポイントには序列をつけ、どちらを主に書くか決めておくと良いです。
具体的な分量としては、主なポイントを3行ほど、そうでない方を2行ほどです。
まとめると、ボディパラグラフの内部構成は以下のようになります：
- 1文目：片方の問いに対する解答とアイデア
- 2文目：1つ目のポイント
- 3文目：1つ目のポイントの説明
- 4文目：1つ目のポイントの具体例
- 5文目：2つ目のポイント
- 6文目：2つ目のポイントの説明か具体例
詳しく、見ていきましょう。
第1文目：トピックセンテンスを書く
各ボディパラグラフは、トピックセンテンスで始まります。
トピックセンテンスは、パラグラフの紹介のようなものだと考えてください。1文で、そのパラグラフに何が書かれているかを分かるように書きます。
トピックセンテンスが、メインアイデアになります。
つまり、この場合は、どちらの問いについて何をボディパラグラフに書くのかを明確にします。
- トピックセンテンス：
There are two primary reasons why upcoming changes are perceived as beneficial.
今回の場合は、「agreeというポジションに対する、2つ理由を展開すること」を明確にしていますね。
トピックセンテンスが上手に書けると、読み手は、パラグラフ全体のメッセージを理解しやすくなります。
第2-6文目：サポートセンテンスを書く
次に、サポートセンテンスを書きます。
サポートセンテンスとは、トピックセンテンスを展開する文章です。
以下の3つの方法があります。
- 説明:
The foremost reason is that these changes will enhance the convenience of our lives. - 詳細の追加:
With technology taking over many of our daily tasks, we are likely to have more leisure time. - 具体例:
For instance, robots capable of performing household chores will allow us to have more time for leisure activities and relaxation.
サポートセンテンスを書くコツは、「具体」のレベルをあげていくことです。
上の例では、説明で “enhance the convenience”とあり、それが何かと言うと、
詳細の追加、 “technology takes daily tasks”であることがわかります。
そして、客観的な事実として具体例、 “robots performing chores”が挙げられています。
どんどん具体的になっていることが分かりますね。
ボディのまとめ
できあがったボディパラグラフを確認してみましょう。
- ボディパラグラフ：
There are two primary reasons why upcoming changes are perceived as beneficial. The foremost reason is that these changes will enhance the convenience of our lives. With technology taking over many of our daily tasks, we are likely to have more leisure time. For instance, robots capable of performing household chores will allow us to have more time for leisure activities and relaxation. Another factor is that our recreational time will be enhanced by new technologies that make our entertainment and even more fun. If we enjoy ourselves more we will be happier and more relaxed.
トピックセンテンスと、サポートセンテンスの関係が明確に書けるようになることが上級者への道です。
言い換えると、ボディパラグラフを書く練習は、抽象度のレベルを意識することでもあります。
実は、この練習はリーディングの力にも繋がります。筆者がどのレベルの話をしているか意識できるようになるためです。
結論の書き方
最後に、結論パラグラフの書き方です。
結論パラグラフであることを示すために、 “In conclusion”からパラグラフを始めます。他の選択肢もありますが、その他のタスクでも使用できるのは “In conclusion”のみです。
このタイプの設問は、結論パラグラフはシンプルです。ボディパラグラフを要約するのみです。
第1文目：ボディパラグラフ1を要約
1文目では、ボディパラグラフ1を抽象的に要約します。
- ボディ1の要約
In conclusion, the outlook for the future appears positive as technology will assume a significant number of our tedious responsibilities, and we will have more advanced options for leisure activities.
もう一度、ボディパラグラフを読み返し、1文で要点を書き直します。
ここでも、コピーだけは避け、極力パラフレーズをするようにしましょう。
第2文目. ボディパラグラフ2を要約
次に、ボディパラグラフ2を抽象的に要約します。
- ボディ2の要約：
The changes that are anticipated with the highest probability seem to be technologies aimed at reducing the amount of time we spend on tasks.
ボディパラグラフは、具体的にどんどん展開するパラグラフでした。結論パラグラフでは、もう一度、抽象的な文章にまとめ上げます。
結論のまとめ
できあがった結論を確認します：
- 結論パラグラフ：
In conclusion, the outlook for the future appears positive as technology will assume a significant number of our tedious responsibilities, and we will have more advanced options for leisure activities. The changes that are anticipated with the highest probability seem to be technologies aimed at reducing the amount of time we spend on tasks.
スコア6.0以上を狙う人は、たった一行で結論パラグラフ終わらせないように気をつけましょう。
解答例
最後に、今までの説明を一つの解答にしてみましょう。

テンプレートは完全に真似をする必要はありませんが、型として覚えておくと便利です。
丸暗記して盲信するのではなく、必要に応じて若干の表現を変えていくことが大切です。
